Prepare for Adoption

Before You Adopt

You must be 18 years or older to adopt.

Adopting an animal is a big responsibility.

When adopting a pet from the Greenville Humane Society, please understand that there are significant financial costs associated with properly caring for a pet, such as veterinary care, training, food, and flea/tick/heartworm medication. It is important to take this all into consideration before bringing an animal into your family.

Consider your lifestyle before adopting.

Will you have the time, space, and resources to properly care for a pet? If you already have pets, be sure that bringing home another animal will be in the pets’ best interest.

Permission of Landlord

You are required to bring proof of permission from your landlord stating that pets are allowed—this includes any breed and weight restrictions.

Bring your pet in to meet before adopting.

Please consider bringing your own pets to our facility to meet your potential new pet. In order to bring your pet to our facility, he/she must be up-to-date on all vaccines and you must provide proof of vaccination record.

At the Shelter

Bonding

After you pick an animal, we encourage you to spend at least 15 minutes with him/her in one of our bonding rooms. During your time in the bonding room, one of our Adoption Counselors will answer any questions you have about the animal or the adoption process.

Application

You will be required to fill out a preliminary Adoption Application in order to proceed with the adoption process. Click here to view the application. You can print it, fill it out and bring it in with you when you visit!

Paperwork

Then, an Adoption Counselor will walk you through the additional adoption paperwork, which includes the Adoption Contract and the animal’s medical paperwork.

  • You are required to take your adopted animal to visit a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of adopting.
  • By adopting a pet from the Greenville Humane Society, you accept full responsibility for the care and wellbeing of the animal.

Heading Home

All animals are required to leave our facility on a collar and leash or in a carrier. If you have these items already, you can bring them with you. You can also purchase them at our retail center during the adoption. We offer a variety of essential products at a fraction of the average retail price.

You are encouraged to purchase flea/tick/heartworm preventive and get your new pet microchipped.
