Animal Over-Population

For every person that is born, 15 dogs and 45 cats are also born. That’s a lot of pets! And every year, between six and eight million dogs and cats enter U.S. shelters. The GHS finds homes for 5,000 adoptable animals each year.

To put it simply, pet overpopulation is a problem. And that problem is growing. While it seems overwhelming to think of millions of unwanted pets, there is a way each and every pet owner can help: have your pet spayed or neutered. Each animal adopted from the GHS is spayed or neutered, and we also have a clinic that offers reduced rates for these procedures.

Another way to help the overpopulation problem is to have your pet microchipped. A small microchip (about the size of a grain of rice) is implanted beneath the animal’s skin and the corresponding pet/owner information is stored in a universal database. If the animal is ever turned in to the shelter or found by a stranger, a simple veterinary scan can reveal the pet’s and owner’s information. This simple process has helped to reunite thousands of pets with their owners. Each pet that is adopted from the GHS has been microchipped, and the cost is included in the adoption fee.

There are so many pets that deserve and desperately need loving owners and good homes. Do your part to help fight overpopulation!
