- If we are unable to accept your animal, we are happy to counsel you about placement alternatives.
Admissions Information
Saying goodbye to a pet can be a difficult and emotional decision. We understand that there are circumstances where finding your pet a new home may seem like the only option left.
The staff at the Greenville Humane Society (GHS) is available to assist in any way we can. If we can help you find a way for your pet to remain a member of your family, that is our first priority. Please consider all possible options and resources before deciding on admitting your pet.
As a limited access No Kill facility we do not have room for all animals.
We can not accept:
- Stray animals: Owners who have lost their pets need a central location to find them, and that is their local municipal agency (animal control/shelter). Under state law, stray animals must be held for a minimum of 5 days in order to provide owners adequate time to locate their lost pets. If you have a stray animal please take it to the Greenville County Shelter located at 328 Furman Hall Rd. or call 864-467-3950.
- Animals with known aggression problems or an animal that has bitten someone.
- Animals with known contagious or fatal diseases
- Pit-Bulls or Pit-Bull mixes.
- Animals with behavioral disturbances that would prevent them from being adopted
What to Expect
Once you have made an appointment, please download, print and complete a Dog Personality Profile for your dog or a Cat Personality Profile for your cat and bring it with you. The appointment will take approximately 30 minutes. We will review your pet’s Personality Profile, records, and do a short interview with you while your pet undergoes a temperament and medical evaluation.
If we are able to accept your pet at that time, you will be required to sign an admission form giving GHS legal ownership of your pet. GHS is under no obligation whatsoever to follow up with information about the animal after admission.
There is no fee required to relinquish an animal but please consider that expenses are incurred in caring for your pet prior to adoption (about $10 a day per pet). A donation of any amount is welcomed and greatly appreciated. Your donation will help your pet and others in their journey to find their forever homes.
Please note:
Greenville Humane Society is a no-kill organization. Animals are NOT euthanized due to capacity or length of stay in our adoption program. In the event that a significant medical complication compromises an animal’s comfort and quality of life or if a pet is so behaviorally aggressive as to present a material danger to human safety, Greenville Humane Society reserves the right to humanely euthanize.
