Donation Spotlight

We love all of our donors and wish we could feature them all! Here are just a few people who have made a big difference.

Daisy and Patrick Long Willsend

Patrick Long Willsend lives in Paris, France along with a very special 10-year-old Jack Russell by the name of Daisy.  Since this sprightly little gal was a puppy, Patrick’s grandmother has sent Daisy birthday money each year, all the way from Bristol, Virginia, to place in her very special “doggy” bank. Thanks to Patrick’s grandmother, who just passed away at the age of 98, Daisy was able to accumulate $144 to be donated to the Greenville Humane Society. This donation meant so much to Patrick and Daisy that they were inspired to travel all the way from their home in France to 305 Airport Road, to hand us the donation in “person”.

The collage features Daisy at some famous French sights back at her home in Paris.

Erwin-Penland

This past summer Erwin-Penland, pioneer of the “Bring Your Dog to Work” Day, helped sponsor the 14th Annual Dog Days week-long fundraiser. The Dog Days committee was led by Erwin-Penland’s media supervisor, Katie Driggs, and associate media director, Joy Howle. The fundraiser was a huge success and with the help of the committee, the GHS received over $5,000 in proceeds.  Dog Days, which features a photo contest, chipwich sale and, more recently, a Yappy Hour & Silent Auction, continues to be to a tremendous success. Employees at Erwin-Penland celebrate the finale with their annual “Bring Your Dog to Work” Day.

Woodmont High School

Each year Greenville County Schools really get into the spirit of giving as they compete during Spirit Week to raise money for their school’s annual philanthropy of choice.  This past year, the GHS was honored to be chosen by Woodmont High School.  The students of Woodmont High School helped raise a whopping $10,000 to benefit the animals of GHS. Kim Pitman, Director of the GHS, describes the students of the school as “pace setters” for they will be the first school in Greenville County to name one of the rooms at the GHS’s new facility.  The students of Woodmont High School will be leaving their legacy with the naming of our Volunteer Center and have set an extraordinary example for future volunteers to come.   Such generous donations help make it possible for us to provide food, care, and shelter to countless homeless animals.

Plantations at Haywood Apartments

The Plantations at Haywood continues to inspire with their novel approach to business giving.  The apartment complex, which has no weight restriction, offers to waive the initial pet deposit in exchange for cash or a food donation.  All proceeds are then given to the Greenville Humane Society to benefit our homeless pets. The residents of the Plantations at Haywood have donated over $1,000 to GHS in 2011!

Hands On Greenville Day

Over 150 volunteers from Erwin-Penland met for Hands On Greenville Day in April to landscape the 2+ untouched acres of land surrounding the new and improved Greenville Humane Society; a tremendous feat considering they only had 4 hours to complete the job.  The team banded together to cut 2 acres of grass, remove extreme overgrowth, plant 29 trees and 35 shrubs, spread 40 CY of mulch, and lay 35 pallets of Bermuda sod.  The team also managed to install 100 feet of French drain with gravel.  Their efforts helped lay the groundwork for our courtyard, parking lot, and walking grounds.  Now our dogs have a stress-free environment to enjoy a walk and meet their future owners!

“Hands on Greenville, a program of the United Way of Greenville County, helps individuals, families and corporate and community groups find flexible volunteer opportunities with more than 300 service organizations.” To learn more about Hands on Greenville visit http://www.handsongreenville.org/about.

Bon Secours St. Francis Health System Pet Food Drive

Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, in a creative effort to provide supplies for needy animals, collected over 800 lbs. of donated food during their two week celebration of the Feast Day of St. Francis which occurs on October 3. The Concierge Staff, one of the many vital department staffs at St. Francis, is pictured with some of the donated items.

SC Childrens Theatre

This year the Greenville Humane Society was honored to flaunt some of our precious pups in the lobby of the Peace Center during the SC Children’s Theatre production of Doctor Dolittle. The production, which focuses on the bond between humans and animals, allowed for a perfect opportunity to educate families on responsible pet ownership. Paula Church, our Community Outreach Manager, was there to educate the public on important issues, such as affordable pet healthcare services, and was proud to announce that every animal taken to the production found a home with a family from the audience! The production team of Doctor Dolittle helped us demonstrate that love truly is a four-legged-word.

Girl Scout Adopt Me Vests

Emma Hennessey, a 12-year-old local girl scout, created these eye-catching vests to help our adult dogs find their forever homes.  It was a difficult task but Emma’s hard work paid off and she was awarded her Girl Scout Silver Badge. Critter, who was happily adopted, proudly flaunted his vest for a photo.   Don’t be surprised if you spot an “Adopt Me” vest around Greenville. The vests made their début at a Greenville Drive Game and were even featured on the jumbotron! Volunteers often elect to tote our adoptable pets around with these adorable vests and Hannah, an admissions counselor at GHS, even takes some of our dogs rollerblading!
